Welcome to the
High Arts Atelier

High Arts Atelier is a Renaissance Art School based in Turin, dedicated to promoting, preserving, and advancing the artistic heritage of the Old Masters through a wide range of educational and cultural activities.

Our mission is to restore the value of the great European and Italian Traditional artistic tradition while promoting Russian artistic and cultural heritage, from its medieval roots to the major artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries.

At the Atelier, students study and explore in depth the Classical Techniques of Academic Drawing and Painting, the artistic methods and technologies of the Italian Renaissance Egg Tempera Painting and narrative Composition.

Our courses are founded on the traditional Russian Academic Method of drawing and painting, enriched by the legacy of the great Italian schools of the past, whose approach provided artists with a comprehensive and rigorous education. This synthesis offers students a structured path toward strong technical foundations, expressive independence, and a profound mastery of the human figure.

Through a wide range of traditional media—including graphite, charcoal, red chalk, pastel, oil painting, egg tempera, and other techniques—students develop both the technical discipline and artistic sensitivity necessary to create works grounded in the principles of classical art.

Drawing is the foundation of the educational method upon which all the artistic disciplines taught at High Arts Atelier are built. Through the study of academic principles, the mastery of traditional artistic techniques, and consistent practice from life, our programs foster the development of artistic sensitivity—an essential quality for every artist, regardless of their chosen specialization.

At High Arts Atelier, we are dedicated to the study and teaching of Traditional Classical Art, while also exploring its natural evolution through dialogue with contemporary artistic expression and the possibilities offered by new technologies. In this way, the Atelier seeks to preserve the knowledge and discipline of the classical tradition while encouraging its continued development and relevance in the contemporary world.

High Arts Atelier promotes an artistic education grounded in the direct observation and study of the human figure, landscape, and still life. Most of our courses include portraiture and the artistic nude, artistic anatomy, the study of light and shadow, and color theory, alongside an in-depth exploration of the techniques and tools used to represent a wide range of subjects, forms, and materials—including the principles and practice of the classical landscape tradition.

The Atelier also teaches the Russian Academic Method, traditionally known as the “constructive method” of drawing. This approach enables students to understand and construct the figure consciously, rather than simply reproducing what they see. By developing a clear understanding of structure, proportion, volume, and movement, students learn to create original figures, characters, and compositions without depending on photographic copies.

Our programs cultivate an intelligent and analytical observation of reality, refining the artist’s ability to perceive and translate volume, proportion, light, and space onto paper and other artistic media. Through this process, students embark on a fascinating journey into the principles of “artistic physics”—a synthesis of technique, perception, and sensitivity through which observation is transformed into artistic expression.

The Method of
High Arts Atelier

Our teaching method in classical painting and academic drawing is rooted in the educational tradition of the Russian Classical Art Academies. It is founded on the study of form, structure, light, optics, and their influence on visual perception, providing students with a profound understanding of the principles that govern artistic representation.

The curriculum also encompasses the study and mastery of the tools, materials, and techniques of graphic and pictorial representation, applied to the human figure, objects, and the diverse forms found in nature. Through this rigorous approach, students develop technical precision, visual awareness, aesthetic sensitivity, and interpretive ability, building the skills necessary to translate observation into a coherent and expressive artistic language.

The Study of Ancient Painting Techniques of the Italian Renaissance

High Arts Atelier offers a range of artistic programs dedicated to the discovery, study, and practical exploration of the painting, sculpture, and artistic techniques of the Italian Renaissance.

The courses focus on the traditional materials and methods of Renaissance tempera painting, as well as the numerous techniques developed and practiced in Italy between the 14th and 16th centuries. Participants have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the historic Italian art workshops, learning traditional methods, working with authentic materials, and gaining first-hand experience of the processes used by Renaissance artists.

The programs also include the study of plaster techniques, bas-relief construction, and a wide range of other artistic practices characteristic of the Italian Renaissance. Through a combination of theoretical study and hands-on experience, participants gain a deeper understanding of the materials, techniques, and creative principles that shaped one of the most influential periods in the history of Western art.

The knowledge and practical skills acquired throughout the program enrich the creative experience and open new perspectives in the field of figurative art. By experimenting with different materials, processes, and historical techniques, students are encouraged to expand their artistic possibilities and develop a personal, authentic, and distinctive artistic language.

Medieval Artistic Techniques

High Arts Atelier promotes not only the artistic heritage of the Italian Renaissance, but also the extraordinary world of medieval art, through programs dedicated to Russian and Byzantine iconography and its contemporary interpretations.

Our iconography courses offer participants the opportunity to study one of the oldest and most fascinating traditions of medieval painting, exploring the principles and techniques of iconographic “writing.” From the preparation of natural pigments and traditional materials to the creation of the sacred image, students are guided through the essential stages of this ancient and contemplative artistic practice.

The program offers an opportunity to experience the discipline and craftsmanship of the medieval iconographer, immersing participants in the evocative world of sacred painting. The slow, methodical nature of the process encourages concentration, patience, and attentive observation, transforming the act of painting into a deeply contemplative artistic experience.

Beyond technical instruction, iconography can become a meaningful journey of personal exploration and inner development, creating a space for focus, reflection, and a deeper connection with one’s own creative sensitivity. Through the study of this ancient tradition, participants discover not only a remarkable artistic language, but also a practice in which technique, contemplation, and creative expression come together.
